Galatians 6:1-2 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him with a spirit of gentleness. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

When we think of the Law of Christ, we should think of a set of governing principles. You might respond to the idea of fulfilling a law, any law, as just another effort to establish one’s own righteousness, something Paul taught clearly against in his letter to the Galatians. You could cite Romans 6:14 where we’re told that we are not under law but under grace.  You’d be right, we’re not looking for ways to become righteous. We have been made righteous (Romans 5:1-11), yet you might be overlooking the way of the righteous, a path that we all should follow.

“The Law of Christ” is just that, the law of the Christ (in the Greek it reads τὸν νόμον τοῦ Χριστοῦ). It’s quite specific. I’m guessing that a lot of believers who long to be Christ-like, might struggle to define what the Law of Christ is. Most would say it is loving God and others. That is true but it can get a little abstract. The central question in fulfilling any law isn’t just to know what it requires but to understand how that should be accomplished. Fortunately, our text tells just how to go about fulfilling the Law of Christ.

It is really very clear, at least one way of fulfilling the Law of Christ involves carrying one another’s burdens. Its about helping when you are able. Being able means being Spirit led and gentle. When the burden another is carrying is a trespass, being able also means being wise and humble. It means not thinking too highly of yourself. We see that in Galatians 6:3.

I wonder how often pay enough attention to actually see the burdens others are struggling to carry. Do we, instead of being concerned, wonder how they got themselves into this mess? Are they simply getting what they deserve? Perhaps that’s true some of the time. Yet, our attitude is a little suspect. Remember, the natural man doesn’t seek the things of God, they seem foolish to him (1 Corinthians 2:14). Let’s try not to be foolish.

As an exercise of faith today, let’s try something. Take a moment and ask someone close to you how they’re doing. Ask if they’re carrying a burden that seems a bit to heavy these days. Remember to be transparent and tell them about yours. Use wisdom if that is a trespass. Most things like this can be simply things we’re worried about. This is a great exercise between spouses, parents and children, family, and other believers. Simply asking the questions conveys care and care conveys love. I believe this is pleasing to the Lord. We can see that in Galatians 6:8 but we’ll likely get to that in another devotional.
