This is the second part of our devotional on the important message in the book of Hebrews chapter one. This chapter is important because it compares and contrasts the way God watched over His people before He sent His Son and how He does so since that crucial moment in human history.

There is a great deal of evidence in the Biblical text as well as in Jewish literature from ancient times that the angels of God watched over His creation and helped the prophets and leaders of His people Israel prepare the way for Jesus the Christ. Stephen spoke of their role in bringing the Law in Acts 7:53. Paul echoed that in Galatians 3:19 and Hebrews 2:2. We can read of it in the works of Flavius Josephus, the first century Roman historian of Jewish descent. We see the agency of angels in encounters with the Patriarchs, Moses, Joshua, and even Balaam.  Isaiah spoke of “the angel of His presence” watching over Israel, saving them from trouble, redeeming them, lifting them up and carrying them (Isaiah 63:9). Here in Hebrews 1:14 we are told that angels are “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.”

Should we focus on or listen to angels; of course not! We know that angels are not all servants of God. No, we hear from the Son of God through the Holy Spirit (Heb. 1:2, John 16:13). Angels aren’t with us to teach the Gospel (Galatians 1:8). They are here to serve those who inherit salvation (Heb. 1:14).

When we meet to hear from God, they eagerly long to hear what is taught (1 Peter 1:12). Angels are there to protect God’s children, to lift them up, to carry them when they cannot walk. They are there so we can experience the fullness of God.  That brings comfort to me as I hope it does for you.
