2 Peter 1:1-2

1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

Our devotional text for today is the introduction to the Apostle Peter’s second epistle to believers who had been driven out of Jerusalem and occupied what is now modern Turkey (1 Pet.1:1). Peter cared for these believers and wanted to remind them who they were in Christ and protect them from influences that would blind them to that reality. Remind and protect, all true pastors will do that.

We see two important aspects of who we are here: We are people who have received a precious faith, and we are people for whom grace, and peace are multiplied through the knowledge we receive of God and of Jesus our Lord.

In the first verse, you will note that we have received a precious faith. It is as precious as the faith Peter and the others in Jerusalem had received. The verb translated “have received” is in the past tense with a sense that it continues in the present. As believers, we have all received faith and it is precious or of great value and potential. We don’t create faith, we receive it. Otherwise, faith would be a human work. Today and every day, faith is something precious we possess. It can move mountains (Matthew 17:20).

In the second verse, we see that when knowledge is added, grace and peace are multiplied. How can it be that when one thing is added, others are multiplied? We could speak at length on this phenomenon, but I think the most obvious is that when we let God speak to us through His Word, it unlocks something of the potential in the faith we’ve been given. When we grow in knowledge, we think differently, and who we are is an expression of our thoughts. Just like the faith we have received isn’t a human work, neither are the grace and peace we experience.

Take a moment and think about these two things: grace and peace springing from faith activated through knowledge. Let’s consciously let this happen in our lives today! Have a wonderful day and we’ll see you tomorrow!
